RNC Chair Plans to 'Buck That Trend' of Losing Seats Midterm

(Newsmax TV's "The Howie Carr Show")

Republican National Committee chair Ronna Romney McDaniel said Tuesday the GOP plans to "buck" the trend that traditionally penalizes the party in power in midterm congressional elections.

In an interview on "The Howie Carr Show" on Newsmax TV, the niece of former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said the GOP-controlled Congress, however, will have to "get things done."

"Historically, the party that holds the White House does lose roughly 30 seats in the midterm," she said. "This is the year where we plan to buck that trend."

"I think we'll come out with victories, but it's going to be important for Congress to get things done," she added. "We're going to need to see tax reform and other things accomplished so that our voters feel motivated to go out and vote Republican and keep these majorities."

McDaniel pointed out "voters want to see things get done."

"They're going to have to make a decision come November '18 as to whether they go vote Republican again if we haven't gotten those things done," she said. "I think they will because I think they recognize what the alternative is — and [Senate Majority Leader Charles] Schumer [D-N.Y.] and [House Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy] Pelosi [D-Calif.] are not very appealing to Republican voters."

She added things could turn out well for Republicans in 10 states in which Democratic Senate incumbents are running — and where President Donald Trump won in 2016.

"We have a real opportunity for pickups and the candidates that are running in those 10 states are great candidates," she said.

As for her uncle making a bid for the Senate from Utah, McDaniel said it will be up to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and whether he wants to run again.

"Orrin Hatch, as far as I know, has not made a decision as to whether or not he's going to run again for re-election in Utah," she said. "But I do think if he doesn't run, my Uncle Mitt would definitely look at it and potentially run for that seat."
