Ray Flynn: Media, Leaders Silent on Christian Persecution

By    |   Friday, 14 Nov 2014 01:38 PM

The silence from the media and the nation's leaders on the persecution of Christians in the Middle East is "deafening," says Ray Flynn, former ambassador to the Holy See and former Boston mayor.

"Where are the representatives of the elected people?" Flynn asked Ric Blackwell and Morgan Thompson on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Friday. "Where is the media?"

Flynn, who also appeared on Newsmax TV on Thursday, when he said that the persecution in the Middle East could amount to a Christian holocaust, and it's being largely ignored by the United States.

He also questioned why President Barack Obama and Congress have been so "silent as this world atrocity is taking place."

On Friday, he added the American media to that list.

"Except for this program here, Newsmax, 'America's Forum,' where are all these other media outlets?" he asked. "How is it that they can focus on almost irrelevant issues compared to this one? How come they're not speaking out? What's the problem with the media and our national political elected officials?"

Flynn says that neither he nor others have even been invited to appear on other media programs to discuss the persecution that Christians are facing in Iraq and Syria.

"Somebody should be speaking out about these atrocities," he contends, adding that he and others wonder "why these political leaders are afraid to speak out."

"The silence is deafening," he said.

"I thought we learned from the Holocaust," he added.

"I was in Rwanda during the genocide and the criticism that came down to the international community for not speaking out or taking a position on it until it was almost too late," Flynn explained.

"That's happening now," he contends. "Why aren't they speaking now?"

The ambassador to the Holy See under President Bill Clinton explained that both Jews and Christians are "principal targets for . . . extermination" in the Middle East.

"Why is it that our elected officials in Washington and in London and Brussels and the United Nations . . . don't hear this message?" he added.
