Campos-Duffy: Plan Makes Hispanics Look Like Freeloaders

Tuesday, 17 Feb 2015 04:27 PM

President Barack Obama's immigration reform plan — stalled this week by a U.S. district judge — makes Hispanics look like freeloaders, says Rachel Campos-Duffy, former star of MTV’s "The Real World: San Francisco" and national spokesperson for The Libre Initiative.

"It should be no surprise … Obama himself said 26 times that he didn't have the authority to do this. ‘I can't do it,’ and then he did it," Campos-Duffy said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"This, of course, bolsters what the Republicans were saying, that this was not the right way to go."

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanan temporarily blocked Obama's executive action on immigration that would protect millions of illegal immigrants from deportation. Hanan said the White House overstepped its authority.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by 26 states which argued the Obama’s plan violated constitutional limits on his powers.

Ironically, Campos-Duffy said, The Libre Initiative — a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that advances the principles and values of economic freedom to empower the U.S. Hispanic community — is for reform.

"We think there is a way to do it to bring both parties together … but it was done in such a hasty way," she said, noting that Obama’s plan has potential pitfalls that paint Hispanics in a bad way," she said.

"There are these loopholes [that] … create the impression – which really angers me as a Latina – that Hispanics come here for freebies … They create the impression that we didn't come here to work.

"It's not good for Latinos. The impression [Obama is] creating is very troubling and terrible for Latinos who really rightfully deserve to have credit for being hardworking and entrepreneurial because they are ... The executive order is not something that Hispanics wanted. And again, using our community for their own political gains."
