With homegrown protests escalating against the Iranian dictatorship, North Korea could be teetering on the brink of losing billions of dollars a year in income, Gordon Chang, a leading expert on Asian politics, told Newsmax TV.

"Iran reportedly sends about $2.5 to $3 billion a year to North Korea for their various forms of cooperation," Chang told Monday's "The Brett Winterble Show."

"To put that into context, North Korea has a GDP (gross domestic product) of somewhere between $28 billion and $29 billion, so what Iran sends to North Korea is material.

"And if the Iranian mullahs go, [North Korean strongman] Kim Jong Un is going to be affected by this because he's going to lose not only a major ally, he's going to lose an important source of money."

In recent months, Iranians have taken to the streets to protest the Islamic Republic's corruption and cronyism, chanting for the downfall of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

And Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., who is chair of the House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats, said last week he believes the days of the clerical regime in Iran "are numbered" and it could lose power "in a blink of an eye."

That would mean a major financial hit for Kim, who has continued saber-rattling over his country's nuclear might which has infuriated the United States.

"So this is one thing we've got to keep our eyes on," Chang told Winterble. "Because this has implications of course for the gulf but has also . . . has implications for North Asia."

Chang is the author of "Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World," published by Random House.
