Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly tells Newsmax TV that Donald Trump's vow to "make America great again" as the nation's 45th president is a credible pledge that is resonating with Americans.

"When he says I'm going to take back America, he's believable. You think 'well he's done great things. He can do something great for our country, too,'" Schlafly said Friday to J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"What Obama has tried to do is make us just like every other country. We don't want to be that. We want to be the greatest. We want to be superior in military strength and we want to be superior in all good things like freedom for people."

Schlafly believes Trump's tough talk on immigration — he'd deport all illegal immigrants and "anchor babies" — has raised an issue that's "very beneficial" for the Republican party and for the country.

"Nobody was really saying what was so terrible about these illegal aliens and the crimes they've committed after they've been arrested and convicted in the U.S. and they came back anyway. He's given a voice to this so-called 'silent majority' and they appreciate that," she said.

Additionally — the billionaire developer, who is the Republican frontrunner with a substantial lead over Dr. Ben Carson and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — is not afraid to take on the media to get his points across, according to Schlafly.

"He doesn't let the media get by with evading what he's saying and putting other words into his mouth," she said.

"He's very good at handling the press and people like that. People are tired of the news media selecting our issues and selecting what we're to talk about."

Schlafly said she's not ready to endorse Trump, or any candidate, yet, "but I do thank him for making immigration the issue that I believe should be one of the biggest issues."

Schlafly, 91, is the founder of Eagle Forum, an Illinois-based group that describes its mission as enabling "conservative and pro-family men and women to participate in the process of self-government and public policy making."
