President Donald Trump was right with his debate argument Thursday night that New York City has become a "ghost town" because of policies of Democrats, including rules about the coronavirus pandemic by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that are often "arbitrary" when it comes to ordering shutdowns, Rep. Pete King told Newsmax TV Friday.

"In the first month or two, I think Andrew Cuomo was doing the right thing," the New York Republican told Newsmax TV's "John Bachman Now." "It's continued on. It seems arbitrary. It seems to be his personal fight going on with Mayor [Bill] de Blasio."

For example, movie theaters throughout the state can open their doors for 50% capacity audiences, said King, but not in New York City.

"There's no reason for that," said King. "That's where the bulk of the entertainment industry is."

Other rules concerning restaurants are forcing them out of business, King said, which also affects employees, suppliers, distributors, and more.

And when the devastating impact of the shutdowns is combined with the riots this summer and the restrictions on the police, "New York is becoming a ghost town," King agreed. "More and more people are moving out."

Meanwhile, King said he thinks the current impasse on coronavirus stimulus legislation is occurring because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "doesn't want the American public to get a check with Donald Trump's name on it."

"I'm definitely coming around to the theory that Nancy Pelosi does not want a deal because any deal that comes out, she's afraid will be looked on as a victory for Trump," he said. "They are willing to prolong activity so the Democrats will have a talking point issue up to Nov. 3."
