Pete Hoekstra: Boehner Is 'Lead Pipe Cinch' to Retain Gavel

By    |   Tuesday, 06 Jan 2015 11:17 AM

House Speaker John Boehner is a “lead pipe cinch” who has no chance of being ousted from his post when the new Congress takes a vote today, former House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's “America’s Forum.”

“Louis Gohmert and Ted Yoho have got the finest intentions, but they and Walter Jones, they are going to come up short today,” Hoekstra predicted. “Hopefully, this doesn't set the tone for this session and they'll be able to mend these fences and come back together and put a conservative, Republican agenda for the American people. Let's hope today doesn't taint the waters for the rest of the year.”

Reps. Gohmert of Texas and Yoho of Florida are challenging Boehner for the seat. They are part of a group of tea party conservatives who don’t think Boehner has done enough to challenge President Barack Obama.

Hoekstra said he’s impressed with the incoming Republican leadership, specifically California Rep. Devin Nunes, who will chair the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas, who will lead the Armed Services Committee and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin who takes over of the Ways and Means Committee.

“(Nunes) is part of Speaker John Boehner's inner circle and he's very well prepared to do this job,” Hoekstra said.

Ryan, a former chairman of the Budget Committee is a” budget wonk” who “understands policy,” he continued.

“If we're going to get tax reform, Ryan is the person to do this with the Senate and he has a good relationship with Democrats,” said Hoekstra.

And Thornberry is someone “who's put a lot of time in learning the ropes both on intelligence and armed services. He's going to be a very capable leader,” he said.

“The changes in committees are going to give us a very good run of experienced congressmen who are prepared to lead.”
