Gov. LePage on Sheriffs Not Working With ICE: 'We Enforce the Laws'

(Newsmax TV's "The Howie Carr Show")

Maine Gov. Paul LePage told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that sheriffs that refuse to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport criminal illegal immigrants can expect to lose their jobs because "we enforce the laws."

"They all have a letter that they need to follow the request of the administration," the second-term Republican told "The Howie Carr Show" in an interview. "If ICE wants to have someone detained in a county jail, they must detain them."

LePage, 68, said Monday that he was considering removing two sheriffs for what he said was lack of cooperation with ICE officials, according to local news reports.

"One of the sheriffs said 'I'm not going to detain them.' And I said, 'Well, you have no choice.'

"If they broke the law, you have to enforce the law," he said.

"We have to obey the laws in order to keep a society that can work together and move forward and grow.

"We do not have the option to pick and choose those that are going to enforce and those we are not going to," LePage said. "We enforce the laws."

LePage also slammed Sen. Susan Collins for saying that she would oppose the latest Republican effort to repeal Obamacare.

"She's clearly making a national decision, not a decision for Maine, because the Graham-Cassidy bill is very, very generous to rural states like Maine and the state of Hawaii.

"We would gain about 44 percent additional revenues for our healthcare in Maine, where preexisting conditions are already a law in Maine and have been there since the 70s.

"They are just on the wrong page on this."
