Paul Bremer: US Entering a 'New Era' in Keeping Americans Safe

By    |   Thursday, 04 Jun 2015 06:33 PM

The United States has entered challenging and dangerous new phase in its fight to keep Americans safe at home — and the battle gets tougher every day, says Paul Bremer, the former chairman of the National Commission on Terrorism.

"We have entered a new era. It is important to say it's almost impossible to stop these one off lone wolf terrorists. No matter how good your intelligence is, that's very hard to stop," Bremer said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"What we have to be worried about is ISIS (Islamic State) gaining more and more in the world's most dangerous region and eventually having the capacity to conduct large scale attacks on the homeland.

"I don't think they have that right now … they didn't have it in 1989 or 1990 — but they sure as hell had it in 2001."

Bremer, who also served as the first presidential envoy (governor) of Iraq, is dismissive of Sen. Rand Paul's blaming members of his own party for the creation of ISIS.

"I frankly don't know what he's talking about. He doesn't know his history I guess. Al-Qaida, in Iraq, was defeated by a Republican president, George Bush, who did the brave thing and searched troops in 2007 and 2008," Bremer told Steve Malzberg.

"Basically, that Iraqi Army, with the Americans, helped defeat al-Qaida in Iraq now. What we have now is the al-Qada and Iraq Version 2, al-Baghdadi, the head of ISIS with a member of al-Qaida and Iraq. I just don't know what he's talking about frankly."

Asked about the indications that Iraqis have shown no progress in stopping ISIS from continuing its reign of terror across the Middle East, Bremer said:

"I still have hope that the present administration will see that American interests are not served if we simply abandon Iraq and Syria and basically the Middle East at this point …

"The strategy should be the stated goal of the president a year ago, which was to destroy ISIS. I don't see how that strategic objective has changed. The problem is that he hasn't carried out a policy, which will lead to that.

"We've got to put more American men on the ground there, special operators and advanced air controllers so the airstrikes become more effective … [And] we got to step up our intelligence on the ground and share it with the Iraqis."

Bremer said that, unfortunately, the work to defeat ISIS is "all going very slowly."

"We should try to get some of the regional powers from the Saudis and Egyptians … more active in the battle there … We're not playing a very clever game."
