Democratic impeachment managers are attempting to create a false narrative in their filing Tuesday of a brief outlining their case, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., tells Newsmax TV.
On Tuesday's episode of "Greg Kelly Reports," the host read from the document, which said Trump "summoned a mob to Washington, exhorted them into a frenzy and aimed them like a loaded cannon down Pennsylvania Avenue as the Capitol was overrun." The document further noted media reports that Trump reportedly was "delighted" by seeing the mob's actions.
"This is something that a far-left political action committee might be able to wedge into a commercial," Kelly noted. "This is not, in my opinion, something for a legal document."
"What they're trying to do here is create the appearance, a facade of something that actually didn't happen," Nunes responded, noting that "mobs and riots were occurring for the last year" — an apparent reference to protests that sometimes turned violent over police shootings of Black people.
"So you have to apply a little common sense to this," Nunes said. "Donald Trump had every right, just as every American does."
Nunes noted that the two pipe bombs found near Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee headquarters near the time of the Capitol riot were left there the night before, and that when the rioting began Trump was still speaking, so Trump's speech couldn't have sparked either of them.
"Now, I'm not downplaying any of this," he said. "The Republican Party is the party of law and order. We have zero tolerance for people breaking windows and busting down doors interrupting proceedings."
But, he added, "to try to move that forward and impeach a president after he's already out of office for doing what he had every right to do, which was to speak to somebody a half a mile away, a group, and some of them there so that he could express … his rights as an American citizen, to complain of what he thinks is election fraud, he had every right to do that."
