Robert Walker: FCC's Net Neutrality Plan Stifles Innovation

By    |   Thursday, 26 Feb 2015 01:27 PM

Regulating the Internet — what the FCC is attempting to do with net neutrality — is a surefire way to stifle innovation, former Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Walker said Thursday on "America’s Forum."

"Congress has specifically decided over a period of time not to put regulations on the Internet because the idea was that we want as much innovation as possible," Walker told the Newsmax TV program.

"What the FCC is about to do is to stifle innovation in one of the most heavily growth sectors of our economy. It is just completely maddening that they would move in that direction."

The left likely favors net neutrality for nefarious reasons, he said.

"What they want to do is, they want to be able to have rules and regulations," he said. "Let's remember what the left has done to the IRS. They have totally corrupted the IRS by using it against their political enemies.

"There is a lot of suspicion that that's the direction they're headed in this case."

Additionally, Walker said, "internationalizing" the Internet would remove it from U.S. control.

"We have to assume that the more regulations we get on the Internet, the more they're likely to move it out of the hands of American decision makers," Walker said. "If it becomes internationalized, they will be able to have a say, probably through the United Nations, about what is permitted to be put up on the Internet and what is not.

"What immediately you go after  [is] the idea of free speech, because China in operating the Internet in their own country disallows certain things from being presented to their people."
