Firearms Instructor and Mom Talks Safe Carry of Gun, Toddler

An Iowa mother of three who is also a certified firearms instructor tells Newsmax TV that she wears a holstered weapon for personal safety while she carries her youngest — and teaches other moms with guns and tots how do the same.

"It's not a matter of wanting to do one or the other; it's if you've chosen to use a firearm for self-defense and you also have children, you somehow have to make both co-exist safely," Melody Lauer told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner on Thursday. "

Lauer said she first thought about teaching "Babywearing and Carrying," as she calls her seminar, after she became the administrator for an online group of mothers with firearms, and the safety question kept being asked.

She was also spurred by news reports of accidents involving children and firearms, especially the story last December of an Idaho woman who died after her 2-year-old son reached into her purse and accidentally discharged her handgun.

"That was a factor that really saddened me," said Lauer. " My daughter … she just turned three and it really touched me because I'm in that same dynamic. There was really no reason that should've happened, and there's been a lot of speculation as to why that could happen, and of course the primary reason was because the child was allowed access to a firearm that he should not have had access to."

Lauer, who has worked at a gun shop and is an NRA- and Rangemaster-certified shooting instructor, said that until she began offering her workshop she hadn't heard of anything comparable.

"There isn't a voice out there that's saying, 'It's OK to carry a gun, but let's do it right,'" she said. "There's either, 'Don't carry a gun; get rid of it completely,' or 'Carry a gun, but we're not sure what to do with the kid.'"

She said her course is "mostly about safety."

"It's mostly about safe handling," she said. "We know that the top two reasons for firearms accidents in the United States are improper storage and improper handling. If we can teach proper handling and proper storage, we can help eliminate some of those problems."
