Dick Morris to Newsmax TV: Manchin Showing Power With Tanden Vote

Former presidential adviser Dick Morris suggested on Newsmax TV on Thursday that Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has announced his intention to vote against President Joe Biden’s nominee for director of the Office of Management and Budget, Neera Tanden, as a display of the influence he holds in the U.S. Senate.

“What he really is doing is using this vote to show his power, that he’s essentially a one-man United States Senate now,” Morris said on “American Agenda.” “The Republicans are going to vote one way. The Democrats are going vote the other way, and then it’s up to Manchin. And he’s reveling in that position.”

With a Senate divided 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats, Vice President Kamala Harris holds the tiebreaking vote. However, one defection from the Democrats, such as Manchin, removes Harris from the vote.

Tanden angered many in the Senate on both sides of the aisle with what has been characterized as insulting social media posts over the past several years. Morris said Manchin was not one of Tandem’s targets, but Harris’ visit to West Virginia at the end of January to bolster the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion so-called COVID-19 relief bill was a serious breach of protocol.

Manchin also has said he does not support raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, a provision of the $1.9 trillion bill critical to many liberal Democrats.

“Of course, Biden has to realize that if he (acquiesces) to Manchin, he then has to turn around and make his deal with (Sens. Raphael) Warnock and (Jon) Ossoff, the two crazy radical members from Georgia,” Morris said. “And I don’t think the captain of the Titanic could navigate between those icebergs.”
