Hailing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech on ending "blind engagement with China," Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, called it "a major shift in foreign policy" on Newsmax TV.
"It's probably the best speech I heard him give on what is now becoming the issue for our generation," McCaul, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and chairman on the China task force, told Thursday's "The Chris Salcedo Show."
"Most Americans and most people in the world want to know what happened in Wuhan," he added to host Chris Salcedo. "How did this COVID-19 happen? Could we have stopped it? How can we stop it from ever happening again?
"And also to re-examine our foreign policy with the People's Republic of China, which is precisely what my good friend Mike Pompeo did today. This is a major shift in our foreign policy."
McCaul said speaking with former Secretary of State James Baker who said, "we tried to bring them in the family of nations for decades," but "it just didn't work."
"So, now we need a new paradigm, a new shift in our foreign policy," McCaul said, adding the GOP members of China task force is "100% supportive" or Secretary Pompeo and the Trump administration's call to change the way it deals with China.
McCaul noted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., did not support the China task force to be bipartisan, calling it a distraction effort for Preident Donald Trump.
