Wash. Post's Rubin: Huckabee Threat Unfair to GOP

By    |   Friday, 10 Oct 2014 06:08 PM

Gay marriage is quickly becoming legal state by state and Mike Huckabee's threat to quit the Republican Party because he claims it has given up on fighting it is unfair to other GOP members, Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin says.

"Whether they want it or not, they have [gay marriage]. How is he going to undo that?" Rubin, author of the "Right Turn" blog, said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"How long does he think the other states are going to hold out and what does he propose people do to keep them from adopting the same legal judgment that the rest of the states have?

"It's really unfair to other Republicans who are not pleased with this, who did not want either gay marriage at all or didn't want it to come to judicial action to say that they're capitulating or they're squishes simply because they've looked at this and said, okay I see reality."

In an interview on Tuesday with the American Family Association, Huckabee charged that Republicans have given in on battling gay marriage and other social issues and vowed that it jeopardized his standing with the party, as both a voter and a potential presidential candidate.

"If the Republicans want to lose guys like me, and a whole bunch of still God-fearing, Bible-believing people, go ahead and just abdicate on this issue — and go ahead and say abortion doesn't matter, either. Because at that point, you lose me, I'm gone," Huckabee said.

Rubin said the threat by the former Arkansas governor is reminiscent of last year's "government shutdown" mentality.

"It's that same mentality, we're going to fight for the sake of fighting, anyone who doesn't want to fight with us is a squish and we're going to take our marbles and go home," Rubin said.

"I've got news for him, the Republican Party is the only pro-life party there is and if that issue is still important to Governor Huckabee, [if] religious liberty is still important, he better stick with the Republican Party because Hillary Clinton is not going to protect his interest.

"Harry Reid is not going to protect his interest, Nancy Pelosi is not going to protect his interest so where he's going to get political sway from if he leaves the Republican Party I do not know, but this is grandstanding and it's unfortunate."

Huckabee's comments came after the Supreme Court's decision not to address gay marriage during the high court's new term and let rulings by lower court judges stand.
