House Republicans this week will roll out a spending plan to "rein in" President Joe Biden's "reckless spending" with "a reasonable lift" of the debt ceiling, Rep. Michael Flood, R-Neb., vowed Monday.
In an interview on Newsmax's "Wake Up America," Flood said the GOP aims to take spending for fiscal year 2024 to fiscal year 2022 levels.
"It will save taxpayers trillions of dollars over the next 10 years, make us less dependent on communist China, curb high inflation — all while protecting Social Security and Medicare benefits for seniors and a reasonable lift of the debt ceiling into next year," he said of the GOP plan.
"We're basically talking about taking spending from … fiscal year 24 to fiscal year 22 levels… a 1% annual growth over the next 10 years," he said.
According to Flood, the plan does "simple things like reclaiming unspent COVID funds — that could be $60 billion that's sitting in the treasury right now" and "defunding Biden's IRS army."
"The things that we're talking about are common sense… ending the student loan giveaway to the wealthy," he added, asserting it gives up "$5 billion a month and counting."
"Meanwhile private student loan providers are seeing default rates well under 3%. It doesn't make any sense," he said.
Flood also pushed back against criticism from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., that Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has more influence on the House caucus than Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
"There's only one person in America that could work this deal, that can be in a position to actually solve this crisis, and that's Kevin McCarthy," he said of McCarthy's leadership on the debt ceiling talks. "He has done a wonderful job threading the needle every single day."
Flood promised the nation will see "a united Republican Party" and "a united House Republican conference this week."
"We're going to send the message that we're ready to negotiate. … and we want to put Kevin McCarthy in the position to solve this for America and on behalf of the American people, that is our goal," he said.
"And AOC and anybody else can say whatever they want," he asserted. "They're not in the meetings, and they're going to be the ones watching the vote this week."
