The results of Tuesday night's special Senate election in Alabama were a shot at an accused child molester, not President Donald Trump or the Republican Party, Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "America Talks Live," Reagan told host Miranda Khan it was clear that Republican Roy Moore lost to Democrat Doug Jones because of sexual misconduct allegations dating back 40 years.

"It was a vote against someone who's accused of child molestation. That is what the election was about," Reagan said. "That's why 23,000 didn't hold their nose and vote for him, they didn't hold their nose at all, they voted for the write-in candidate, if you will.

"We're talking about child molestation. He was accused of that . . . Was he a flawed candidate? Yes, but he's a flawed candidate accused of child molestation."

Several women have said Moore, 70, either sexually harassed or assaulted them when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s.

Reagan, the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me," said the GOP now has to heal itself ahead of future elections because of its decision to back Moore despite the allegations.

"You have the Republican Party who has said, we put party over child molestation," Reagan said. "And that's not going to bode very well with the women in 2018 and they've got to find a way to in fact get around it."
