Americans are grasping the "illegality" of leaked classified information about former national security adviser Mike Flynn's conversations with Russia, Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.
"People are starting to understand that the sin of Michael Flynn was lying to the vice president of the United States — not speaking to the Russians," the veteran political commentator told Thursday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."
"The fact of the matter, the illegality of what went on was the reporting of that to the media. That was the illegal issue that took place, not the Michael Flynn side, but the Michael Flynn side was he lied to the vice president.
"I shake my head and think to myself, why would he do that? What purpose would it serve not being honest with the vice president of the United States and leaving the vice president of the United States out there hanging out to dry on the Sunday morning shows?"

Trump has blamed the media and "illegally leaked" intelligence information for bringing down Flynn, who reportedly spoke with Russian officials about sanctions imposed by President Barack Obama, but insisted to the vice president he did not.
"What was the purpose? What the reason?" Reagan asked. "I certainly would like to know the reason why he would do that, and so he deserved to be fired immediately by the president of the United States."
Trump insisted Flynn did nothing wrong by talking to Russia, saying Thursday the former national security adviser was doing his job. The president believes intelligence workers left over from the Obama administration are responsible for the leaks, which he called "criminal action."
