White House communications director Hope Hicks' departure represents a "big shakeup," but ultimately will not affect President Donald Trump's presidency or his re-election bid, according to political commentator Michael Reagan.

In an interview Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now," the Newsmax contributor and son of the late President Ronald Reagan called Hicks "one of the smartest ones in the room."

"It's a big shakeup," he said, adding, however, it should not be unexpected she would leave.

"Her boyfriend's gone, now she's testifying," he said, referring to the resignation of aide Rob Porter amid allegations of domestic abuse, and her testimony in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe. "It's time to get her life back."

He dismissed, however, the notion she would be crucial in Trump's campaign for re-election.

"She may come back in, she may not," he said, adding it will not matter in terms of Trump's re-election messaging.

"Its always about Donald Trump," he said.

Reagan also applauded Trump for showing leadership in his televised bipartisan meeting on gun safety Wednesday.

"None of us has ever seen this kind of leadership before," he said, calling it "terrific to see negotiations, what he's doing."

But he took issue with Trump's declaration due process should take a back seat to confiscating guns in the hands of mentally ill people.

"That should concern a lot of people," he said, bringing up a fictional case of a call coming into police about a "nutcase" with a gun, and then finding out later the "nutcase" was the caller.
