Michael Reagan: We're Raising People to Hate America Instead of Love It

Some Americans are misguidedly tearing down the United States, focusing too much on its imperfect history and forgetting its greatness, Michael Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan, told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

Reagan was asked about his reaction to the decision by Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh to remove all Confederate moments from public spaces following the deadly white power rally in Charlottesville, by Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Now."

"It was her decision to make but I believe it was made because of the fear of riots in Baltimore and statues being torn down as they were last night in other cities back in the east coast. So it's really out of fear at this point and time.

"It's really unfortunate to the point that I think most of these people who are acting and reacting like this have never studied the history of the United States, really study it, study who these people are.

"I doubt if any of them know how to spell the names of the people on the statue and it just shows what's happened with our education system in America. We're raising people to hate parts of America instead of raising people to find ways to love parts of America."

Among the statues pulled down in the dead of night because of their connections to slavery were the Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson Monument and the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, The New York Times reported.

"The fact is we've changed over the years. That is part of our history. And if we keep on tearing down our history what will our history be?" Reagan told Khan.

"The problem with the media today is they believe history began this morning when they woke up. And that's sad that we've done that.

"I remember playing golf with a young man a couple of years ago when I was headed to Normandy to raise the American flag at the American cemetery at Normandy. A 28-year-old young man looked at me and didn't know why there was an American cemetery at Normandy."

And during a trip to Germany, Reagan added, "a kid I ran into in Berlin... thought the Americans put up the Berlin Wall to keep the communists out of their sector."

"We sit there and we don't educate people on what's great about America," he said. "We try to find those areas of America that maybe we don't agree with and then you see what's happening in the country and the world today where we grow up angry, mad and what have you. It's truly unfortunate."

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," published by Humanix.
