Political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Wednesday that "Republicans have put themselves in the place of forcing the president to go elsewhere because he wants to make a deal."
"He's not an ideologue," the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker. "He's not really a conservative.
"He's playing the role of a conservative at this point."

Trump was scheduled to meet Wednesday over dinner at the White House with two top Democrats, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, to discuss tax reform and other issues.
"The Republicans now are going to have to do something on taxes," Reagan told Tucker. "I would not at this point, if I was in the Congress, I would not be waiting for the president to lead me where I want to go with tax reform.
"I would be doing tax reform today and make sure it gets on his desk," he said.
"If somebody is going to stop tax reform, have it be Schumer and the Democrats instead of the Republicans fighting every day tooth and nail for their own little programs they've got going.
"Get over it," Reagan declared. "Pass tax reform.
"Give it to the president of the United States and start leading."
