Political commentator Michael Reagan on Friday praised the conclusion by the President Donald Trump and Russian Vladimir Putin that Bashar al-Assad should be removed, but told Newsmax TV that a larger question loomed on the issue.

"If something positive comes out of it and they're able to deal with what's going on in Syria, that's a terrific thing to come out of that meeting," Reagan, the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker.

"The only problems we have is who replaces Assad and where do we go from here?

"One of the major gaffes that we've had in the West is we keep on replacing leaders we don't like with leaders that we absolutely don't like," Reagan said.

"We’ve got to put the right person in there – and who's going to be in control of that?

"Is Putin going to be in control of who's going to be in Syria leading?" he asked.

"Or is our government, our president, going to be in control of who's going to be leading Syria – and where do you go from there?

"It's a mess in Syria and it's not going to happen overnight."
