Michael Reagan: Anger May Spell Danger for Next President

By    |   Wednesday, 25 May 2016 09:09 PM EDT

The next president, whether it is Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton, could be in danger with the heated political atmosphere currently engulfing the nation, political commentator Michael Reagan tells Newsmax TV.

"It scares the hell out of me," Reagan said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

When his father, Ronald Reagan, in 1976 ran against incumbent President Gerald Ford, "nobody was angry," he said. "There weren't riots in the streets. There was an honest debate between the Rockefeller Republicans and the conservative Republicans."

Reagan says he fears the next president may not "live to see the end of the term."

Reagan said he would like to see both Trump and Clinton try to calm their supporters so the debate could focus on "real issues" instead of throwing verbal "hand grenades" at each other.

Clinton now has Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren acting as attack dog against Trump, but that could end up backfiring, Reagan said, since it might make Democrats think they should have gone with Warren instead of Clinton since she is more effective at attacking Trump.

"Elizabeth Warren makes Hillary Clinton look terrible because when [Clinton] goes on stage and tries to come up with some issue or talk about Donald Trump she really looks like a fool," he said. "She can't get her words out. She's trying to remember what she's supposed to say to put Donald Trump on the defensive, which is just never going to happen."

Reagan also touched on Clinton's email server controversy, saying the media should be focusing more on the fact that she used a private email server, unlike any of her predecessors at secretary of state.

"She may say, 'Well, everybody's done it.' She's the only person who's ever had their own private server in their home," Reagan said. "It's really about that server in her home. That is the issue that should be discussed by all the media."
