Michael Reagan: Franken's Move Gives 'High Ground' to Dems

Political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Thursday that Sen. Al Franken's resignation will give the "high ground" to the Democrats — and they will use it "to try and keep the women on their side of the spectrum coming to the elections in 2018."

"The high ground will go to the Democrats for having two Democrats step down, accused of sexual harassment," the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker.

Republicans, on the other hand, have "changed their tune and did a 180 in the last 72 hours to where they were not going to support Roy Moore, to where they're now going to support Roy Moore because he is ahead in the polls.

"They'll make an issue of this," Reagan said. "It's a good issue for the Democrats to use."

Further, Moore's victory in Tuesday's special Senate runoff election amid sexual harassment allegations "will affect the Republican Party and their elections in 2018," Reagan told Tucker.

"It could come up against them and cause them to lose seats they wouldn't have normally lost."

Turning to President Donald Trump's recognition Wednesday of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Reagan said "I don't think it's going to bring about peace" in the region.

"I don't believe there's ever going to be peace in the Middle East," he added. "It's just not set up that way and that's unfortunate.

"Many people have died, many more people will die. We keep on thinking we can bring peace to that area of the world.

"The only reason there was peace during the Carter years is because we promised billions of dollars to both sides to show up at an event at Camp David," Reagan explained. "That's why everybody showed up.

"Money will bring some kind of peace, but it's always the United States' checkbook that does that."
