Former Republican Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan of Illinois said Friday the charges of sexual misconduct against GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama were a "bombshell," explaining an accusation of that kind in the current political client was enough to convict.

"It is a bombshell. It is one of those irrefutable, tar-covered claims that the accusation is enough for a conviction in whatever context you're using it," Flanagan told Newsmax TV's J.D. Hayworth.

Flanagan maintained that an accusation of this kind had become a "hobbyhorse," explaining the media did not previously engage in rumor because "the press held itself to a higher standard in reporting these things."

"It used to require an absolute pass to the police where you filled out a report and you made an affidavit and you swore under oath that certain things were true. Then it became a news story. Then it was somebody who is saying that this happened, and they swore to it. Now, you don't have to do that anymore," Flanagan explained.

"You just have to whisper quietly four decades after it happened to somebody else who then repeats it to the newspaper, who then publishes it," he added.

Flanagan said he was "withholding judgement" about Moore because there was "an awful lot of rumoring in Washington about this being a setup job."

Moore has been defending himself against an accusation published in The Washington Post on Thursday that said the former Alabama state Supreme Court justice engaged in sexual misconduct four decades ago with young women when he was in his early 30s. The youngest accuser is a woman who said he approached her with unwanted sexual advances when she was 14.

Moore has vehemently denied the claims, telling the "Sean Hannity Show" radio program on Friday, "These allegations are completely false and misleading."
