Gold Star Mom: Michael Moore 'Has No Idea What Courage Is'

By    |   Tuesday, 20 January 2015 05:24 PM

The mother of the first Navy SEAL killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom says liberal filmmaker Michael Moore — who labeled American military snipers "cowards" — is nothing but a coward himself.

And, Debbie Lee, founder of America's Mighty Warriors, is daring Moore to undergo just a single day of SEAL training — something she guarantees would instantly change his mind.

"It just infuriates me when I hear this uneducated talk and Michael Moore's comments about them being cowards," Lee, mother of Mark Allen Lee, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That's the only thing he knows. That's his character, so he recognizes what a coward is and he just wants to throw that out there. He has no idea what courage is.

"I've got more courage in my little pinky that he will ever have and then to dishonor our men and women who serve in the military and tell them that they're cowards, we need to educate that man."

Last week, Moore, who directed "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Bowling for Columbine," tweeted: "My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes. And invaders r worse."

That was perceived as a blast at Clint Eastwood's film, "American Sniper," which is based on the true story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, and has been nominated for six Academy Awards.

Moore insisted he was not criticizing the Eastwood movie, but in a subtle swipe, added:

"So here’s what I think about American Sniper. Awesome performance from Bradley Cooper [as Kyle]. One of the best of the year. Great editing. Costumes, hair, makeup superb!"

What Moore needs to do, Lee said, is experience what the Navy SEALs go through, if even for just a few hours.

"You come with me just for a day. We'll go down to the SEAL base and we'll put you just through the training. Not the reality of combat. We'll just put you through training and see if your opinion of these guys is a little different," Lee challenged.

"These men and women were willing to sacrifice their lives for you and for me. My son gave his life so Michael Moore could have that freedom to be able to say what he says.

"But when you start dishonoring and attacking our veterans and saying that they're cowards, bring it buddy. I'll challenge you any day. I could make [a day of training for Moore] happen in a heartbeat.... I'm sure he would have an entirely different opinion when he's done with the day."

In 2006, Lee's son was in Ramadi, Iraq, helping clear an area of enemy fighters when he was struck by enemy fire and killed instantly. His mother founded America's Mighty Warriors to support the families of soldiers who've died.

"Chris became like a son to me. I was so stinkin' close to him and it felt like losing a second kid when he was tragically murdered," Lee said.

"But I know that if he were here today, his comments about the movie would be, this is not about me. This is about all of our veterans. This is their story; this is their family's story.

"Chris's motto was to serve those who served us and he was living that. Mark's last letter home talks about, to my family and friends, do me a favor, pass on the kindness, of love, the precious gift of human life."
