An elite New Jersey prep school was dead wrong when it demanded its African-American student body president resign or face disciplinary action for posting a racially charged photo on the web, the New York Civil Rights Coalition says.
Maya Peterson made fun of the "typical" white male Lawrenceville School student by posting a photo of herself in a Yale University sweatshirt and holding a hockey stick, with a caption reading "Lawrenceville boi," and hashtags such as "#confederate" and "#romney2016."

Michael Meyers, president and executive director of the New York Civil Rights Coalition, wrote to Lawrenceville to protest the ultimatum.
"This was freedom of speech. It was satire, it was mockery,'' Meyers said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on
Newsmax TV.
"They said to her that you have got to resign as student body president because your speech is offensive. This is outrageous.''
