Rep. McCaul to Newsmax: US Has to Make Iran Poor Again

By    |   Monday, 29 January 2024 10:42 PM EST

The key to ending Iran-backed proxy warfare in the Middle East is to cut off funding the source itself, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday.

The difference between Iran now and Iran under President Donald Trump is the billions upon billions that the Biden administration has unlocked and turned over in three short years, McCaul said on "Rob Schmitt Tonight."

The United States needs to go back to a policy of making Iran poor again, McCaul agreed with Schmitt.

"I think that's a correct analysis and that I passed out of my committee the Ship Act to enforce all sanctions on Iranian energy oil exports, which is not being done by this administration," McCaul told Schmitt. "I passed legislation to stop the $6 billion and the hostage deal that was negotiated with Iran, which is a crazy deal, giving them 6 billion dollars."

House lawmakers in late November passed a bill — introduced by McCaul — 307-119 to force the Biden administration to permanently freeze the $6 billion in funds that it opened to Iran in exchange for the release of five American prisoners.

"But we gotta stop and hit them where it hurts, and that's her pocketbook," McCaul told Schmitt. "And I think the more we can sanction to cut off energy exports some more, we can have an impact on them. And nobody wants a war.

"I worry in this part of the world, very easily miscalculations can lead to escalations. I think the last thing we want right now is another war in the Middle East," he said.
