Gen. Hayden: 'We're Still Fighting' War on Terror

The war on terror is far from won five years after the killing of Osama bin Laden, Gen. Michael Hayden tells Newsmax TV.

America is safer now than it was before 9/11, but "probably not as safe as we were one, two, three or four years ago," Hayden told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth on Monday.

Hayden, former director of the CIA and the National Security Agency, said he was put off balance at the public celebrations the night bin Laden was killed.

"I think a lot of Americans felt a sense of finality about the war on terror," he said. "Nobody with my background had that feeling that night. They knew this was going to continue for a long time, and, sadly, we were right."

Recent turmoil in Iraq is just the result of a cobbled-together country after World War I, Hayden said.

"This was an artificial creation of European diplomacy," he said. "I think the Iraqi state has ceased to exist. We need to be looking forward to some sort of new at least federal system because I just don't think we're going to recreate the old unitary country we used to call Iraq."

Hayden said the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds should likely be partitioned.

"That's not something that I'm favoring. It's not something that I'm arguing for," he said. "I'm just suggesting that might be the best that we can accomplish. It may be inevitable."

Syria, too, likely won't be put back together, Hayden said.
