Ex-Rep. Flanagan: Coulter's Right, the Wall Should Come First

Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter is pretty much on the money when she says President Donald Trump should skip tax reform for now and focus on building a U.S.-Mexico border wall and deporting illegal immigrants, former Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"Ann ignores the fact we're trying to lower the tax on businesses — we haven't done that in ages and that's really an important task — but Ann is right," Flanagan, now president of Flanagan Consulting LLC, a Washington, D.C., lobbying firm, said to Newsmax's JD Hayworth.

"We can't lose our focus on the wall, on healthcare, getting rid of Obamacare and taxes, but they're in interrelated and this is the complication of it. This is what Washingtonians have to communicate.

"And if Paul Ryan were running the House under regular order, if we actually had a Congress communicating these concepts — that they're all interrelated, that we have to move them all more or less together — the American people would understand this better than us."

On Wednesday, Coulter ripped Trump as he made a speech on his tax reform plan in Springfield, Missouri.

In a long string of tweets, Coulter said Trump should focus instead on building a border wall to keep out illegal immigrants and deporting those already here.

Flanagan, who served Illinois's 5th District from 1995 to 1997, said Republican-controlled Washington seems to "hopscotch from one issue to the next, to the next and leaving behind important ones and embracing new ones."

But that could change now that four 2018 Republican congressional candidates in Minnesota who are challenging Democratic incumbents are declining to support Ryan's leadership, Flanagan told Hayworth.

"They just form a center of gravity to pull the party left or right. It's the guys in the middle, if you can get them to revolt, or to say 'look, Mr. Speaker, we're not playing anymore until you fix this.' That's when change begins to happen," Flanagan said.

Those four candidates, according to The Washington Post, are: St. Louis County Commissioner Pete Stauber, challenging Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan; commercial pilot Dave Hughes, taking on Rep. Collin Peterson; state Rep. Tim Miller, also challenging Peterson; and businessman Jim Hagedorn, running for the seat to be vacated by Rep. Tim Walz.
