Ex-FEMA Dir. Michael Brown: PR Crisis Compounded by Logistics

Dealing with the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico is easier said than done because of logistical reasons, former FEMA director Michael Brown told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "Newsmax Now," Brian told hosts Bill Tucker and Jonathan Gillam the problems left behind by Hurricane Maria nearly two weeks ago made things challenging for rescuers on the ground.

"You can't just take a Blackhawk or a Chinook and just take pallets of goods and fly them into the mountainous regions and then just put them down somewhere," Brown said.

"You have to secure a landing zone . . . when I use the word secure, I'm talking about you've got to make certain the power lines, the debris, even the looters, because I can take a Chinook and I can drop pallets of stuff in the middle of nowhere, and if I don't have teams on the ground to distribute those goods, I guarantee you that looters and other people will show up, they'll hoard supplies, and they'll never get out to the people that need it."

Puerto Rico was leveled by the hurricane, and there have been complaints — particularly from San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz — the U.S. government was not doing enough to help its territory in the Caribbean Sea.

Brown said Cruz needed to listen to current FEMA director Brock Long and start helping with the cleanup and recovery instead of complaining from the outside.

"We need her to plug herself into the incident command structure because you don't know what mayors need unless they feed that into the governor, who then feeds it into FEMA that can then spread it out to DOD or the Department of Transportation or whomever," Brown said. "So as long as she's out on the docks just complaining about stuff, she's not only doing a disservice to her constituents, she's actually keeping that aid from getting to them quickly."
