GOP House Conference Chairwoman and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney was confronted by several Republican members of the House during a closed-door meeting of party representatives earlier this week over her “non-support” of President Donald Trump, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

The gathering Tuesday was the first in-person gathering of the House Republicans in four months, and Massie said on “Greg Kelly Reports” that he took the opportunity to challenge Cheney for financially supporting his primary opponent, Todd McMurty, whom he defeated 81%-19% on June 23.

“The meeting got a little heated when I confronted her in the meeting, and said ‘Hey, are you going keep doing that, are you going to give to primary opponents of sitting Republicans,” Massie said. “And she got a little confrontational, and then people starting confronting her, (Rep.) Jim Jordan (of Ohio) and others about her support, or non-support, of Trump.”

TheHill.com reported – citing anonymous sources – that Cheney also was challenged for her support of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House coronavirus task force.

Massie agreed with Kelly it “could be” that Cheney’s issues with Trump were “personal.” Kelly referred to Trump’s criticism of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, which Cheney’s father – former Vice President Dick Cheney – was an advocate. Trump chided Liz Cheney in a tweet about the issue on Thursday.

Kelley also referred to Liz Cheney’s family’s relationship with the Bushes, who have been critical of Trump.

“But it got personal when she gave money to my primary opponent so he could run negative ads,” said Massie, who added that Rep. Mike Gaetz of Florida also stood up to confront Cheney. “We think, right now, is the time for Republicans to get together. November is coming up quickly.

“Republicans, we need to take back the majority in the House and we need to get President Trump re-elected, so it’s not a convenient time to be sniping at one another. And that was the beef we had in the conference this week.”
