Marsha Blackburn: Hillary's Homespun Makeover Won't Work

Hillary Clinton has changed from a tough-talking hardliner to a sweet, hair-dying grandma in a bid to make herself more likable to Americans, Rep. Marsha Blackburn tells Newsmax TV.

"She's trying to get her footing, basically. When you look at what she is doing, she knows that things didn't work for her [in her 2008 campaign]," Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"The polling shows that she is not a very likeable character. What they're doing is what they ought to be doing. They are trying to humanize her and make her likeable."

Clinton, in her debut campaign rally in New York last Saturday, got laughs as she joked:

"I may not be the youngest candidate in this race, but I will be the youngest woman president in the history of the United States … You won’t see my hair turn white in the White House. I’ve been coloring it for years."

But Blackburn, vice chair of House Energy Committee, said she believes there's a "problem" with the strategy.

"People have not liked her and issues are very serious right now. The number one issue with women is national security. They're not in the joking mood. They don't care if she colors her hair and they don't care about what she does with yoga classes or whatever," Blackburn said.

"What they do care about is their families being safe, their children having opportunities. They're concerned about security and job security and retirement security for their parents and grandparents. And they're looking at Hillary Clinton and women are just thinking, what is she doing?"

Blackburn also has an eye on Clinton's polling numbers.

"The thing that's so interesting to me, her numbers were at the high water mark the day she announced," she said.

"She has just been kind of on a creeping downward in her popularity numbers and her ratings ever since that day."
