Ex-McCain Adviser: Romney in Risky Move to Strengthen McCain

Mitt Romney's eleventh-hour stumping for John McCain is a stab at shoring up the Arizona senator's re-election campaign, which has waned because of his frosty relationship with Donald Trump, Mark McKinnon, former media adviser to McCain and President George W. Bush, tells Newsmax TV.

But it could also further alienate some Republican voters turned off because of Romney's own distaste for the billionaire real-estate tycoon, he believes.

"John McCain is running for re-election. He's in a pretty tight race. As you know Arizona is shifting demographically and that's why [Hillary] Clinton was here yesterday," McKinnon, executive producer and co-host of "The Circus" on Showtime, tells "America Talks Live."

"They think they've got a shot to turn this thing, to turn it blue again. The last time they did that was with Bill Clinton in '96.

"Like other Republican senators, [McCain has] kind of been [hurt] by his relationship with Donald Trump. He hasn't embraced him 100 percent and so that's created some problems for him here in Arizona."

As a result, McCain has shied away from the media, according to McKinnon, because he doesn't want to talk about Trump.

On Thursday, McCain and Romney, the last two Republican presidential nominees, joined forces for a last-minute, get-out-the-vote push as McCain makes his final pleas to voters to elect him to a sixth term.

"[McCain is] bringing in Mitt Romney, who of course is the most famous Never Trumper of them all," McKinnon said.

"I don't really understand strategically what the play is here because there's one clear message that Romney sent… and I think people are pretty clear what that is."
