Krikorian: Visa Program Allows Those From 'Terrorist-Infested Countries' to Get in

The Diversity Visa Lottery program through which suspected terrorist Sayfullo Saipov entered the United States "disproportionately" provides "a way for people from terrorist-infested countries to get here," immigration critic Mark Krikorian said Wednesday.

In an interview on "The Howie Carr Show" on Newsmax TV, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies said the program dates to a 1990 immigration bill that increased legal immigration, backed by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and then-Rep. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

The program "is basically saying we need to give 50,000 visas at random to people around the world because — and this is basically the assumption . . . every country in the world has a right, an entitlement to be able to send people here," he said.

But there are security risks, he added.

"One of the security problems, security-related problems, is that it's disproportionately a way for people from terrorist infested countries to get here," he said.

"Less than 5 percent of all immigrants last year came through this program but 50-plus percent of immigrants from Algeria and Uzbekistan came here through that program — and even like Saudi Arabia, 15 percent of immigrants from Saudi Arabia came through this program," he added.

He also blasted qualifications required for the program.

"You just have to have either a high school diploma or two years of work experience in a job that supposedly requires a high school diploma," he said, adding: "Basically anybody who's breathing and has a temperature and has a pulse can qualify."

"These are people we picked at random, who sort of figured, 'yeah I want to try my luck in the United States,'" he said. "And you know among the millions who applied, they were lucky to get it and they'll come here and some of them will be great.

"But we're not picking them for that," he continued. "It's a ticket out of there but it's a ticket out that you don't really need to earn by being some super high-achieving scientist or something like that. It's one you just get by luck by entering often enough."
