President Donald Trump's signing of Congress' $400 billion budget — which sharply boosts spending and balloons the federal deficit — does not put him at odds with fiscal conservatives, and he was "absolutely correct" in approving it, his national spokesman Mark Lotter told Newsmax TV.
"What it does, is it funds our military, it allows us to rebuild the military, which the president is very committed to doing," Lotter said Friday to Miranda Khan on Thursday's "America Talks Live."
"But because of the way Congress works and because of the breakdown in Congress right now, the president and the Republicans needed Democratic support in the House and the Senate.

"The only way we were going to get that was if we were to increase domestic welfare spending to match or come close to matching our increase in military spending. That's wrong headed, but it was the only way to invest in our military, which is something we need to do. That's why the president was absolutely correct."
Lotter said Americans worried about swelling of the federal budget should consider electing more Republicans.
"For those people who are concerned about debts and deficits including the president, we need more Republicans in office who will hold fiscal accountability who will hold the government accountable," he told Khan.
"The president, remember, put a budget out last year that balanced in 10 years. But you need Congress to be able to enact it. The only way we can get that through Congress is with Democratic support."
Lotter added the need for more welfare might be moot because "to be honest with you, with the growing economy, raising wages, and more jobs, fewer people should need those welfare programs."
