Lotter: Trump 'Very Serious' About Tariffs, Despite Pushback

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

President Donald Trump remains dead set about imposing strict tariffs on imported steel and aluminum despite pushback from some close advisers and fellow Republicans — but he might allow for tweaks to his plan, Marc Lotter, a national spokesperson for the commander-in-chief, told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"He's very serious," Lotter told host Miranda Khan on Tuesday's "America Talks Live." "It's a promise he made on the campaign trail. How that actually comes into effect and whether there are some exclusions is going to be up to the ability of the other countries to come to an agreement where we can have free, fair, and reciprocal trade.

"Let's not forget that just over a decade-and-a-half ago when the United States entered into the Korean Free Trade Agreement, our trade doubled with South Korea. So, we've got some serious issues economically as it relates to trade, even amongst our friends.

"This is a president who says 'I will have those discussions; they're not always easy to solve but we can find a way to improve our trade relationships where both countries can benefit' . . . We've got to put American workers first, and that's what the president promised he would do and what he's doing right now."

Trump is under severe pressure to ditch or alter the plan. His economic adviser Gary Cohn announced his resignation Tuesday night.

House Speaker Paul Ryan wants a more "surgical" approach to their imposition and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina says the plan would let China "off the hook," and drive a wedge between the U.S. and its allies.

But Lotter said there is wiggle room.

"What you seeing right now is a president whose listening to all sides. . . There is a way we can find a common ground here," Lotter told Khan.

"Let's remember whether it's an all-encompassing or whether it's just focused on the biggest abusers like China, we're talking about American jobs here and this is something that the president campaigned on . . .

"What you see him doing right now, whether it's in a broad sense or a more targeted sense, he's fighting to bring back American industry and American jobs here to America."
