House Republicans' vote to remove Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from her role as House Republican Conference chair was justified, according to upcoming primary challenger Denton Knapp, a retired U.S. Army colonel.
Knapp, who earlier this week announced his GOP primary intentions for next year, told Newsmax TV's "John Bachman Now" on Wednesday the public wants trustworthiness in its elected officials, adding Cheney is not voting in the direction the people in Wyoming wanted her to go.
Knapp rejected a Reuters report claiming lifelong Republicans in Wyoming support her and consider Cheney a hero, telling host John Bachman that is not reflective at all of the way most residents in his state think.
Knapp agreed the Cheney family has done much good over many years for Wyoming, the Republican Party, and the nation, but Rep. Cheney's recent stances do not reflect the views of her constituents.
However, Knapp did disagree with former President Donald Trump's characterization of her as a "warmonger."
Knapp acknowledged the Trump administration was successful is using other tools of the government rather than warfare to protect American interests.
Knapp joins state Sen. Anthony Bouchard, state Rep. Chuck Gray, and Cheyenne lawyer Darin Smith in challenging Cheney, according to the Casper Star-Tribune.
"I believe President Trump did a great job with the economy, with jobs, and putting our country first," Knapp said. appealing to the strong Trump base in Wyoming.
Knapp told the Star-Tribune he recently reached out to his former colleagues – former CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and current Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin – about potentially receiving their endorsements.
"I'm in the infancy of this campaign, but I'm getting it started, and I'm getting it started fast," Knapp concluded.
