Rep. Lee Zeldin told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that he called for a special counsel to investigate alleged misconduct at the Justice Department and FBI because "there are a lot of questions right now as to exactly how the Clinton probe ended and the Trump Russia probe began."

"There's enough information that's already released publicly that you can look to," the New York Republican told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker. "There's going to be additional information, I'm confident, that will come out as well.

"At the highest levels of both DOJ and FBI, you can't expect the DOJ and FBI to investigate itself," Zeldin said.

The third-term congressman, who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he expected the House Intelligence Committee to soon release its FISA memo on alleged abuses by the FBI.

"I would like to see the FISA abuse memo released immediately," Zeldin told Tucker, outlining the process by which it could occur.

"The House Intel Committee has a vote to notify the president that they would like to release this memo," he began. "The president can approve or object.

"If the president does not object, the memo can be immediately made public.

"If the president does object — I would just say there's no reason for him to object to the memo being released — but if he did . . . it would then come back to the House Intel Committee and eventually would have to get passed on the House floor to approve its release.

"If we're talking about following the process by the book from start to finish."
