Lee Zeldin: Obama Must Regain 'Strong Footing' on Iran Talks

The United States stands to make a "bad deal that has disastrous consequences" in its framework nuclear-arms agreement with Iran — unless President Barack Obama regains a "strong footing," Rep. Lee Zeldin says.

"In the last few weeks, the ayatollah is chanting 'death to America' in the streets. Obviously, there's a lot of refuting going on in Iran as to … the framework agreement presented by the president three weeks ago," Zeldin, a New York Republican, said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"There's a lot of reason to be concerned that we're on track to make a bad deal that has disastrous consequences."

The framework agreement, announced April 2 by the U.S. and five other world powers, would curb Iran’s ability to enrich uranium in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

Zeldin — a member of the House Foreign Relations Committee which is conducting hearings on the framework deal — likened the ongoing talks to a sports tournament.

"The United States is the number one seed going into these negotiations. We're going up against a mediocre division," he said.

"We are giving up our first three games, we are taking a loss through the first half of the fourth game.

"My point is, this president [Barack Obama], he needs to take a walk, catch his breath and regain his strong footing, because it's crazy just how much is not part of these negotiations."
