Larry Kudlow to Candidate Trump: 'What Are Your Policy Proposals?'

By    |   Monday, 22 Jun 2015 07:10 PM

Donald Trump is a great businessman and booster of economic growth — but the billionaire developer needs to lay out a series of clear policy proposals if he wants to be president, renowned economist and CNBC senior contributor Larry Kudlow tells Newsmax TV.

"Economically speaking, Donald Trump is pro-growth and is a job creator. The trouble is — and I know Donald and I respect him, I've always had a good relationship with him — I'd like to hear what his plans are," Kudlow said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"What are your policy proposals? That's very, very important. I know he has success with business, but I want to hear what his policies are on taxes, for example. Does he have an economic growth [plan]?

"How about the soundness of the U.S. dollar? How about free trade? I'd like to hear him on all these things. He sounded very much like a protectionist bashing China and bashing Mexico, so I didn't really much care for that."

Last week, Trump announced in a rousing speech that he was joining the crowded field of candidates seeking the GOP presidential nomination. Kudlow was not impressed with elements of it.

"He sounded very much like a protectionist bashing China and bashing Mexico, so I didn't really much care for that," said Kudlow, who hosts the syndicated radio program, "The Larry Kudlow Show."

Kudlow continues to be impressed with GOP candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's call for an economic growth of four percent.

"I totally endorse it. It's aspirational and it shows leadership, but it's also doable in my view," he said.

"We've done this in the past. Just three quick examples. After the JFK tax cuts, the economy grew over 5 percent for about six years. This is 5 percent yearly for six years. After the [Ronald] Reagan tax cuts … the economy grew at 4.5 percent for seven years.

"And in the 90s, what I call the [Bill] Clinton-[Newt] Gingrich economy, they were cutting welfare and free trade and lowering the capital gains tax. The economy grew over 4 percent for five years. The point is it has been done and it can be done."
