Kirsten Powers: Protests Against Graduation Speakers Common

By    |   Thursday, 14 May 2015 09:06 PM

A troubling campus trend of protests against commencement speakers whose views conflict with some student or teacher groups has regrettably become a "typical thing," Fox News contributor Kirsten Powers says.

In an interview with Newsmax Prime host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV on Thursday night, Powers decried the "commencement shaming."

"[O]ther free speech activists have called it disinvitation season, where we're starting to see … people being disinvited or protests over commencement speeches because some students have issues with the positions that the speakers hold that are unrelated to the commencement speech," she said.

The latest example is at Le Moyne College, where students objected to a commencement address by Cardinal Timothy Dolan because they charge he's "homophobic" and has been complicit in "sexual violence," the Daily Caller reports.

"I don't think it's OK to ask people to not come to your campus if they don't agree with you … on every single ideological issue," she said. "If you talk to organizations that are dealing with universities on a regular basis, they will tell you that things are changing, something is happening, there is a new attempt to really silence the ideas that … the liberal left … believes are not up for debate."

Powers also blasted feminists who decide which women are worthy of their support.

"A lot of the people who I refer to as liberal feminists are people who say that they care about women, they care about women's issues, except unfortunately that isn't true if it's a conservative woman or if it's a woman who opposes abortion rights," she said.

"Then, the same people who are saying misogyny is their biggest concern are engaging in misogynist attacks against people who disagree with them and delegitimizing them and demonizing them so that their views will not be considered to be valid views that we should be debating."

"[T]he liberals really have been the ones who have embraced free speech and who have articulated views that were very unpopular and have sort of brought the culture around to getting to this point of recognizing that free speech is about tolerating ideas that you don't like, letting people say things that they don't believe, and then debating them," she added.

"Unfortunately, this is just falling by the wayside … "
