Rep. Kevin Cramer: Keystone Bill Protects Jobs, Environment

By    |   Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 12:02 PM

President Barack Obama is clearly not listening to the will of the American people by continuing to deny the passage of the Keystone XL pipeline, according to North Dakota Rep. Kevin Cramer, who appeared Thursday on "America’s Forum."

"The Keystone XL pipeline has enjoyed popular support of the American public for a very long time, since its beginning — and today is what, day 2,337 of the application process?" Cramer said. "So the idea that somehow Congress is expediting the process, we lost that fight a long time ago.

"It was not expedited. It's been expanded and by [Obama] listening to the extreme environmentalists, largely out of Hollywood even.

"If you're an environmentalist, the honest argument is that moving oil by rail is far less environmentally sound than moving it by pipeline or worse, moving it by barge to China, which is another market where this oil could go. That's many times more environmentally unsound than moving it by pipeline to the Gulf Coast of the United States."

On Wednesday, the Republican-controlled Congress approved a bill to construct the pipeline, a measure that President Obama has threatened to veto.

Obama claims to be in favor of job creation and lifting up the middle class, but by denying the pipeline he is hurting American workers, Cramer said. Welders, pipe fitters, pipe layers, back-hoe operators and local businesses would "benefit tremendously" from the project.

"Truck drivers, dealerships, retailers, hotel owners, you've got the steel workers," he continued. "Eighty-eight percent of the steel in the Keystone XL pipeline is resourced through North American companies."

He said Keystone XL is a jobs bill, an environmental bill and an energy security bill rolled into one.

"I mean here we are … asked to authorize military force in the war on terror at the same time as the president's going to veto a bill that would actually make us less dependent on terrorists for our oil," he said. "So the whole thing, the intellectual argument is made.

"I don't think there's a single argument against it that holds water, so all we can assume is [Obama’s] listening to the extremists."
