The federal corruption charges filed against New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver lay out "a pure, classic shakedown-extortion scheme," noted Miami attorney Kendall Coffey tells Newsmax.

"It's got to be a stunning thing for New Yorkers. This guy was the second most powerful person in state government after the governor," Coffey said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He was there a lot longer than any single governor and yet, what is alleged by the prosecutors, by the Feds' Manhattan office is he was basically strong-arming people, shaking them down."

The 70-year-old Silver, one of the state's most powerful Democrats since 1994, was led away in handcuffs by the FBI Thursday. He was accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks, The New York Times reported.

The Times said Silver is alleged to have used his position to obtain payments misrepresented as referral fees from a small law firm.

"A pure, classic shakedown-extortion scheme is what is alleged here. Nothing terribly new — and to the tune of this guy getting $3 million over a period of some years," said Coffey, a founding member of Coffey Burlington, PL.

Silver's lawyer, Joel Cohen, has dismissed the charges as without merit.
