Zogby: Trump's Popularity May Not Go Beyond NYC

Donald Trump is doing well in the polls in New York City ahead of The Empire State's presidential primaries on April 14 — but his popularity may not extend to areas far north of The Big Apple, veteran pollster John Zogby tells Newsmax TV.

"Only 15 percent of the vote in a Republican primary is going to come from New York City," Zogby, CEO of Zogby Analytics and director of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship and Ethics at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, said Thursday to J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"So Donald Trump is polling very well right now but I'm not sure that [former New York City Mayor] Rudy Giuliani's endorsement helps…. I don't know that the mayor of New York City, any mayor of New York City, is a magical name once you go upstate. There is tension between those two."

But an even harder sell throughout New York State will be Sen. Ted Cruz,  Zogby believes.

"New York Republicans are conservative but they're not social conservatives and I think it's going to be very difficult," he told Hayworth.

"It's not only the quote about 'New York values,' it is also the fact that I think Cruz is just way out of the mainstream of where New York Republicans find themselves."

Zogby also said the immigration issue that has been a political hot potato in the nation's border states isn't as big a deal in the Northeast.

"We're in New York for God's sakes, and Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Sure, there have been influxes of immigrants into the cities, even rural areas in these parts of the state, but this is not the Southwest, this is not the Deep South," he said.
