John Zogby: Polls Can Be Wrong, But Not Crooked

Monday, 17 Oct 2016 02:22 PM

Donald Trump is wrong when he suggests presidential polls have been rigged in a bid to make him lose to Hillary Clinton on Election Day, veteran pollster John Zogby tells Newsmax TV.

"The polls can certainly be wrong but crooked — no," Zogby, a senior partner at John Zogby Strategies told Miranda Khan on "America Talks Live."

"That's a conspiracy way too large to get multiple companies, probably many of whom really don't like each other very much to get together and rig the polls. So, no, there's zero chance of that."

Zogby, who is also director of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship, says the consensus of the polls is that Hillary Clinton leads with an average of about 5 percent to 5.5 percent.

"But the polls have something in them for everyone. Everywhere from an 11-point lead for Clinton, down to 1 or 2 for Donald Trump," he said.

"What that means basically is we pollsters really just don't know yet who's going to show up to vote. We're all building what we call turnout models based on either some kind of history or some kind of projection on what groups will turnout and what numbers. That's why you're seeing a differential."

As to whether Trump can reverse his sinking poll numbers in the wake of a 2005 tape — in which he lewdly talks about grabbing women and allegations of unwanted sexual contact by numerous women — Zogby believes it's unlikely.

"There's nothing he can really do to improve his numbers among women, among Latinos, among other non-whites, millennials and so on. All he can right now is slash and burn," Zogby said

"That's the direction I think he's taking to try to dampen the turnout for Hillary Clinton. That's a very risky strategy but it's his only very, very narrow path to victory."

Zogby is the author of "We are Many, We are One: Neo-Tribes and Tribal Analytics in 21st Century America," published by Paramount Market Publishing.
