John Sununu: Trump Might Be 'Undermining His Position' in GOP With Tillerson Pick

By    |   Monday, 12 Dec 2016 03:47 PM

Former Governor John Sununu, R-N.H., said President-elect Donald Trump has to strike a "balance" and work on "overall chemistry" with his cabinet picks, and he should also think twice about his reported secretary of state nod.

Rex Tillerson might pose some problems for Trump as his choice for secretary of state, Sununu, former chief of staff to George H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV's fill-in host Bill Tucker on Monday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

Sununu said it is a red flag when members of your own party express concerns about a potential nomination, as Sens. Marco Rubio, John McCain and Lindsey Graham have done.

"They have serious concerns, and when you have concerns amongst members of your own party in the Senate that have to confirm, when you only have a 52-48 majority in there, you ought to give serious thought as to whether or not it's a good nomination," Sununu said.

"The president-elect may be undermining his own position with his own party on an important nomination and undermining his own credibility in the long run in dealing with Russia, which is a very important role for the president and secretary of state of the United States."

Overall, however, the former governor thinks Trump's cabinet picks have been "a lot better than a lot of folks expected."

"I think they've been good," Sununu said. "I think he now has to start thinking in terms of the overall chemistry and the overall balance across the cabinet. I think he has to start thinking about, 'Have I named too many generals so far?' And not name another one; 'Have I named too many private sector billionaires?' And not name another one; 'Have I named too many private sector people in comparison with people that have public service experience?'"

In the end, Sununu said, public opinion matters.

"Public opinion being formed by the opposition is an important part of the game, and you have to keep that in mind," Sununu said. "You don't get in trouble for doing things wrong all the time. You get in trouble sometimes for doing things right in a way that your opposition can make it look as if you did something wrong, and nowhere is that more true than in Washington in the White House environments."

Sununu is author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush," published by Broadside Books.
