Sununu: Rubio Good at Debate, but Needs New Material

John Sununu, the former governor of New Hampshire and chief of staff for President George H.W. Bush, tells Newsmax TV he was impressed with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's performance in Tuesday's GOP presidential debate, but he's heard the lines before.

"A lot of what he was saying is exactly almost word-for-word what he said in the early debates. So if this was your first debate to watch, he looked exceptionally good, but if you had watched the others, you're beginning to think that some of his phrases are wearing thin," Sununu told host J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

Many of the candidates on the stage accomplished their goals, he said, adding it was probably the most substantive debate so far.

Fox Business Network's moderators focused on economic issues after a late October debate by CNBC, which had been billed as doing the same, fell short.

All the candidates are for cutting spending and sealing the border, so there is likely to be more effort at differentiating themselves from others, Sununu said.

He cited the exchange between Rubio and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul in which Rubio accused Paul of being an isolationist.

"You're going to see a lot more of that one," he said.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was inartful in saying front-runner Donald Trump's plan to build a border wall and deport 11 million illegal immigrants isn't an "adult argument," Sununu said.

Kasich should have challenged Trump on specifics, he said, because deporting that many people is "not a trivial or simple thing."
