John Sununu: No Surprise Brian Williams Was Caught In Lie

By    |   Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 04:42 PM

Nobody should be shocked that Brian Williams was caught in a lie, leading to his six-month suspension as anchor of NBC Nightly News, says John Sununu, former governor of New Hampshire and White House chief of staff to George H.W. Bush.

"I'm surprised everybody's surprised. There had been rumors about this guy's tendency to aggrandize his role in all kinds of things — particularly in Katrina," Sununu said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

He was referring to Williams' statements that while covering the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans he saw a dead body floating by his five-star hotel, faced roving gangs in the hotel stairwell and witnessed a suicide in the Superdome.

"Ever since he tried to really put President George W. Bush down with an interview … I've always felt that this was a guy that just had some kind of psychological problems. So I'm not surprised," Sununu said.

"A lot of people are saying we should be sympathetic to him; I am not sympathetic to him … Very, very pathetic and NBC did the right thing.

"I'm actually surprised how much of a right thing NBC did. I suspect they're not going to let him on even after the six months."

Sununu believes the fall of Williams, who lied about being aboard a chopper downed by sniper fire in Iraq, could affect the potential presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, who once had to retract that she ducked sniper fire in Bosnia.

"Williams really has done her a disservice because it certainly creates the opportunity for those who are going to be taking strong criticism of a lot of things she's done," Sununu said.

"This adds to it, on top of Benghazi, it's really going to make it difficult."
