Counterterror Expert: World 'Slowly Waking Up' to ISIS Threat

The terrorist attacks in Paris were a "wake-up call" for Europe about the threat the Islamic State (ISIS) poses to the world, (Ret.) Lt. Col. John Nagl told "Midpoint" on Newsmax TV Friday.

Nagl, a counterinsurgency expert and headmaster at The Haverford School, said Europe had "grown a little bit complacent," because it had been "a number of years since there's been a successful attack" on European soil.

"These attacks have very much been a wake-up call for Europe," Nagl said. "This should be a lesson to all of us about what's happening in Iraq and Syria right now. The rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is a clear and present danger to the people of the entire world."

The countries of Europe were "waking up" to the dangers they previously hadn't taken seriously because they hadn't believed "the threat was real," Nagl said, predicting there would be "more and more action" as European officials worked to uncover terror sleeper cells.
"I see the world slowly waking up to this threat," he said. "The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, is a clear and present danger to global civilization."

Nagl suggested the U.S. would need to increase its commitment to the battle against ISIS with "15,000-20,000 Americans on the ground in Iraq," and then push the militants over the border and "defeat them in Syria."

As the nation prepared to recognize the 25th anniversary of the Gulf War's Desert Storm, Nagl said the message from that conflict was that U.S. forces had to "get just as good at fighting terrorists and insurgents as we are at defeating conventional tank armies."
